9.04 server install asks for another CD...

Asked by cdt

Hello.
On a AMD x64 dual core machine, my install of 9.04 server (ubuntu-9.04-server-amd64.iso) was going just fine - asked IP information, disk partitioning etc and it duly went off to copy stuff...
However, it then stopped and asked me to insert a CD called:
Ubuntu-server 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope_ - release amd64 (20090421.1)

I was instantly stumped, I cannot see any downloads for said name, albeit some google threads show walk-throughs using the same.
Perhaps some guru would kindly help me out?
Most appreciated in advance.
Cheers

Hello Cristi - thanks for the prompt reply - appreciate it.
I'm sorry I'll have to delay a fuller answer for the moment, I've been given another task right now, I'll ask for your patience and I'll revert as soon as I can fire it back up.
It appeared that it was happily installing the various packages, the installer decided it needed for software that was resident on that 'unknown' CD and was waiting for me to feed it in. As I say, I'll fire it up later and make more of a mental note.
Thanks again.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded? Did you verify the CD once initialy booted to?

Hello.
firstly to actionparsnip - no I didn't MD5 the download (cannot see how to get this via the download webpage at ubuntu.com) but did verify the CD before install...
here's my progress:

hardware = AMD Athlon Dual Core 2400+, 1Gb RAM with 80GB ATA HD.

Boot from Ubuntu 9.04 CD - set the language to English and ask the installer to verify the CD - this completes OK.
Tell it to install...
I select the language and keyboard type - it auto runs a hardware detection and scans CD...
I pick the ethernet card to use (I have two, but choose the motherboard one) and give it a hostname
Working through the partitioning wizard, I tell it to use 40Gb and LVM method - it creates the filesystem...
It then runs through retrieving/configuring and unpacking files - there is a point where it says 'storing languages' and one after that - this flashes through so quick I cannot read it, but it is at this point that it stops and asks me to put in a CD called "Ubuntu-server 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope_ - release amd64 (20090421.1)" .
Incidentally, I couldn't activate the physical CD button to get the CD out, even if I had another to put in; the keyboard remained live and useable...

BTW - I retried the installer with using 'using whole drive and guided partitioning' -

I suspect it's me, but any pointers/solutions will be gratefully received.

Thank you again.

Checksums:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

Guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Please tell 2 friends about MD5sum, and tell them to tell 2 friends.

The CD verifier passing is a good sign but ideally BOTH checks should take place.

You could try some boot options:

Hello again.
Thanks for the advice actionparsnip - I have this to report:
The MD5 sum checks out - it's identical to the site.
I have run a full memory test via the installer CD - and after 51 minutes, it came back with no errors.
I set the install options to 'minimal system' and acpi off - and I fear the installer came back with the same request for this CD.

I can confirm that the standard Desktop install of Ubuntu 9.04 works on this machine just fine.

I appreciate your time and thoughts - got any more? ;-)

cdt
BTW: Have told a colleague already about MD5, so following your advice there as well!

More info...

I have successfully installed this OS as a virtual machine (via VMWare Fusion on a Mac) - using the same .iso that I used to burnt to CD...
Looks like I have some sort of hardware challenge on the physical test box?

Sounds like it, did you try the boot options?

I think the bug is related to your HW configuration. If your hard disk is plugged as SATA drive, please try to switch between SATA-1 to SATA-2 on motherboard. Maybe this will leave the CDROM (IDE port?) to do its job. It seems that at some point the cdrom media is not seen as mounted device.

thanks Christi - I will try it - at some point... I have what I need in the VM to prove a point I think, and should I decide to take it further, I will spilt the physical cabling on HD and CD.
BTW - they are both ATA and set as HD as master - CD as slave = a perfectly normal setup :-/

I'm going to close this question for the moment... many thanks to both of you for your time and expertise, believe it or not I have learnt somethings and that's what life is all about no?

Cheers.
