vmware workstation install error

I am trying to install VMware Workstation ver 6.5.3 onto a new install of Ubuntu desktop ver 8.04.3 I am getting and error when I run the command dpkg on the .deb converted from an .rpm file. Error: "current host architecture 'i386' does not appear in package's architecture list (amd64)" Newbe with Linux any suggestions?

You need to download bundle not rpm.

Go to that link : http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desktop_downloads/vmware_workstation/6_5 and chose VMware Workstation 6.5.3 for Linux.

If your Ubuntu is in 32 bit make sure to take the file Workstation for Linux 32-bit . If it's in 64 bit then take the file named Workstation for Linux 64-bit . Make sure to download the bundle and not the rpm format as told by zacet.

I would suggest you to use VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) if you have other problems with VMware. VirtualBox doesn't require to register to download. It's also free software ($ and open source).
