Connect to Linksys wireless router

Asked by ballyglas

I am trying to use a Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router so that my Windows based laptop can connect to the internet. My desktop runs Linux. I can get the laptop connected via the router but my desktop will not connect to the internet. Is there some configuration change I can make on my Linux desktop or do I need to get the Linksys WRT54GL - which is supposed to interface with Linux (but that then begs the question of if the Windows based laptop will work???)?

Thanks for your help.

Any type of router (wireless or not) is supposed to work with both Linux and Windows. The problem that you have is most probably related to a configuration problem.

Is the Linux desktop connect using wired connection ? If yes, you only need to tell the network manager (see the icon near the clock) to connect automatically to the network. If you're using wireless you'll have to give you're pass phrase and the name of your wireless network to the network manager. For wireless, pay attention to select the right type of security : either WEP or WPA.

Good luck

The Linux is on my desktop; the laptop (which I want to connect via the wireless router) is running Windows. I don't see an icon for a network manager near the clock. Can I get to that through a pull down menu from the System?
