dial up settings keep changing

Asked by Peter

Hi,
I have just switched from Ubuntu 6.06 to Ubuntu 7.04. It is really good but a problem has just developed.
I have an external 56k genius dial up modem which worked fine with 6.06 and also worked fine with 7.04 for the first 5 days. I have had firestarter working all that time too.
When working well it dialled out automatically when turning on the computer. I could turn off the modem with its external switch to free up our phone and when I turned on the switch after a short time Ubuntu would reconnect. Now it wont connect on power up and wont reconnect if I switch off the modem and on again. If I go to the network settings either through the panel modem monitor icon or system admin network I find that the settings are always changed to connection dhcp in other words ethernet which I dont have and I have to set it back to the modem connection either manually or by reloading a saved location and clicking on the tick. Why do you think the settings keep getting changed? Also in 6.06 the panel modem monitor icon had activate and deactivate options which I also used to free up our phone line. In 7.04 the activate and deactivate options are there but in dull print that cant be used . This was the case right from installation when it kept the network settings. I will be away for a week from tomorrow so wont see your answer for a while.
Thanks very much
Peter

I have uninstalled firestarter but this has not fixed the problem. The fact that there were no problems after the installation indicates a bug introduced by a software update since the installation. It is still losing the network settings.

I suspect a bug in network manager. If you can confirm by removing it and checking that the problem is solved, you should file a bug.

I have just filed a bug. How do you remove network manager?

From a command line:

sudo apt-get remove --purge network-manager network-manager-gnome

You can reinstall with:

sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome

You should also link your bug to this question (use the top left menu -> link existing bug).

The bug numbers are 451482 and 451767 but wont ;ink from the top left menu. The reason for the 2nd bug was that I had an email saying the 1st bug was sent to the wrong place

Yes, you can't link bugzilla bugs from here.
Please let us know how it goes.

More info that may help. On startup I get

firestarter firewall...
ppp0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

then

*starting powernowd..
/etc/rc2.d/s20powernowd:156: cannot create
 /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0//cpufreq/scaling_governor: Directory nonexistant

I have put this in bug 451482 also but someone might see what is wrong from here.

To add to the mystery, it has started to work properly again, dialling out on start up and redialling if disconnected. There were no software updates just before it started working again but I did change the DNS addresses although I dont understand how that would have fixed it! Thanks to the people who spent time looking into the problem

One more point when it worked fine with 7.04 for the first 5 days I had the old DNS addresses.
