b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found -> BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 03) not working on Compaq Presario 2210US in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by mingus

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Presario laptop, wiping XP off; previously it connected fine, but now will not connect (wireless network); ethernet card light on computer will not light up. I've entered network name, encryption key, everything I can think of, but Ubuntu insists that card is disabled, and I'm offline. When I click on Network Manager, wireless network is greyed, not allowing me to click on it, though I can edit settings in Network Connection in icon at top left under System.
Router is on, and running another computer on XP; ideas as to why this isn't working?

System-->Administration-->Hardware drivers.

Have you got everything enabled?

I think so; the same router is working for the computer I'm sending this from (using XP), and I entered all the information that the connection box under Network Manager asked for, network name, key, etc; also, that it's a DHCP connection; puzzled as to why Ubuntu didn't find the router. I hope that's enough info; let me know if there's more you need, and thanks!

Hey Mingus,
Have you checked that the card is enabled in your BIOS?

Isak's right too: try plugging your laptop in via Ethernet, using his menu suggestion to check for hardware drivers and updating all packages with the update manager too.

Hi Mingus,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

I haven't tried a restart, but it appears to be still offline for wireless connectivity. My Presario is a 2210US model.
