How to install non-abuntu programms?

Asked by Axel Pedersen

I have installed ubuntu on a new formated computer and is very happy with the set-up, but then when it came to install my AutoCad 2002 and Summa Summarum I was no longer happy, as the installation failed.

Can they be installed and how? May be also the same will happen when I install Legacy 7.0

I hope you can help me or do I have to go back to Windows XP?

Thanks and regards

Axel Pedersen

Autocad is made for Windows.
It will (and can not) install under Ubuntu directly.

Before you go and reinstall XP: (Ubuntu is IMHO the much better OS)

You could try to install VirtualBox which will give you the ability, to "install" and run Windows XP (guest) inside the Ubuntu host. The complete XP with all programmes is stored in a single file. You can tell VirtualBox to create a dynamical disk, which will need very little space on your Ubuntu system and can grow with your needs.
In this XP environement you can install (almost) all Windows applications. Or install MacOS and run mac programs, or ...

I am using VirtualBox and found out, that many applications are running a bit faster then under Windows itself.

Under Synaptics search for virtualbox-ose and take the package virtualbox-ose which will mark several others automatically. Be a bit patient, the installation takes some time (clicking on details shows a bit of the installation, done in the background)

OR the non open source version (installing a bit more complicated)
