password fails on instalation of junty within windows,so cannot get past it.

Asked by stonehengeio

I have reinstalled and installation is fine, but i still get password and user name not recognized?
During installation i get asked for a P/Word and to repeat it, however when i come to the login
on first boot up to Ubuntu desktop it says not recognized.
I also note that retyping it my password sometimes causes it to be written in letters not Dots in
the sign in box.
Can anyone help as im a newbie at Linux.
Micky

Linux is case-sensitive, so take care with your "Caps-Lock" key.
It's not the same....

So try to remember how you enter your user & password during installation.
You should see letters in user-box and (after entering a recognized user) dots in password-box.If not there is any problem.

** Just to know if it there is any gdm problem or you are entering a wrong passwd...
Press "Alt+F1". You will swicht to a black screen and will be ask for user and then for a password to log-in.
If your system recognizes your user-passwd it should work with your graphical login screen.

To return to gdm (the gnome login-screen) press "Alt+F7" and retry.

I only got asked for a password during installation?
not a user name?.
I was also extra careful with typing password in as well.
Would that be my xp user name+ my ubuntu password?.
I will reinstall it again and check alt+F1.
Thanks for the inf.

You have been ask for user & password for sure. Have a look to the link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=Install9WhoAreYou.png

I would recommend you to read some docs with step by step instructions like this one ...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

Maybe the most critical part of the installation is the partitionig. Take some time to know what you are doing if you have a previous OS with documents in order to not loose any of your precious data.

If you have no OS installed this video would help:
http://static.screencasts.ubuntu.com/2009/09/03/Ubuntu_Partitioning.ogv

If you have another previos OS installed on your system watch this video:
http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/2009/09/02/Ubuntu_Dual_Boot_Install

Hope this helps.
