9.04 system freeze on Toshiba M40X laptop

Asked by welshmike

I get a system freeze at random times using such applications and Open Office Spreadsheet, running BBC iPlayer, browsing a website forum, etc.
I then have to reboot.
How may I diagnose what the problem is?

I have a dual boot Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.04 system and want to dump Windows having migrated nearly all my work to Ubuntu.
I've found that Windows XP is frustratingly rather slower than Ubuntu 9.04 and the former makes my laptop fan run quite a lot wheras the latter hardly ever makes the fan run (Does this indicate that XP is much more processor intensive that Ubuntu?) but before I convert completely to Ubuntu I've got to get the system freeze fixed.

When you next boot, read

/var/log/kern.log

XP is slower as it uses more resources to perform the same tasks as well as CPU time as the apps are slicker.

Also make sure you have installed all drivers so all hardware works.

My 9.04 is fully up to date.

How do I know if I have installed all drivers?

Thanks for advice re kern.log.

System froze 15 minutes ago downloading a PDF. The last 2 lines in kern.log are:
Sep 17 21:55:16 mike-laptop kernel: [ 109.854314] ACPI: EC: non-query interrupt received, switching to interrupt mode
Sep 17 21:55:16 mike-laptop kernel: [ 109.856026] ACPI: EC: GPE storm detected, transactions will use polling mode

Shall I post the rather large kern.log in my next message?
