cleaning up old unused files

Asked by achapp

Hello ,
I was initially using daperdrake ubuntu in my system . That time it was occupying a disk space around 3 GB . later i added some additional packages and the total disk space occupied in the OS partition(/) was around 4.1GB . I used to store my datas in the remaining partitions which are all fat filesystem . Later I upgraded my OS to edgy . This time the disk space occupied was around 7.5GB . Again recently I upgraded to feisty fawn . This time the disk space amount to 11GB . In the mean time I had a fresh install of fiesty on my other PC using the live CD . Also almost the same packages were installed . But the total disk space was only around 4-5GB . Why there is large differnce in disk space for an upgraded system than a freshly installed system . Whether the old files corresponding to dapper and edgy is still there ? . If its there how can I find it out and remove it . Is there any advantage in keeping those files or is there any problem with removing those files . One thing to note , the two PC's I compare has the same hardware configuration . A lots of questions within a single question is it !! kindly let me know the answers of all the questions

with regards
Ashraf

Have you cleaned out the downloaded package archives?:-

sudo apt-get clean

Did that free up much space?
