You have downloaded the 64bit ISO, Your CPU is only 32Bit so the 64Bit OS will not run:

ISO:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ubuntu-9.04-server-i386.iso
MD5:

Hi :)

Note that the server edition really is only for dedicated servers serving a lot more than 4 machines or for doing internet-facing only tasks. For almost every set-up it's better to get the normal desktop edition (32bit desktop is the best version of Ubuntu anyway imo)
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download
You can always add a lot of the server functions to the desktop OS. Even without doing that i am successfully sharing out files from my machine across the internal Lan here. I guess the next thing for me to try is gaming but none of the other people on my network likes decent games and most of them don't even have linux anyway so a Wesnoth fest is never going to happen ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi again :)

When you have downloaded the 32bit version this guide is quite helpful about making that into a Cd - the checking procedure and stuff to try out the Cd before using it as an installer

The server should also only be installed if you do NOT want a GUI. Servers do not run GUIs to reduce system impact as well as security. Installing a desktop environment on the server release gains you nothing and you can make your life easier by installing the desktop release.

My purpose to install server edition is to set up a dedicated server for my website and a forum. You mean I should also install the desktop edition?

I have successfully done the 32bit server edition in my pc and installed some software. I have installed the LAMP server and SSH server. If I intend to install addtion software by using the CD , how can I go back to the software listing secttion.

I am very new to set up a server, really need you guys to guide me through these.

Tks again.

You don't need to install software using the CD. Just use apt-get install softwarename which will download it from the repositories.

Hi :)

This page might help for some general things but it is aimed at having the Desktop Edition
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

If you want to add the standard Gnome Desktop Environment which is probably the most stable one although they are all very stable so it's difficult to say - well try this command to add the earthy tones of Gnome

sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

That should bring everything in. It does sound as tho you made a good choice in going for the Server Edition because it has standard settings to give excellent security in an internet-facing role. Most ppl just grab Server for a normal desktop with maybe a little file-sharing and think Server = Advanced where in fact it's just very specifically designed for a very different role, such as the purpose you are aiming for i think

Good luck and regards from

Hi again :)

As Ryan pointed out when you install most programs and things it is better to use the repositories that are stored on-line, rather than using random CDs which might have older versions or contain Windows problems oops, i meant Windows programs lol. Since linux has it's own programs which tend to be very much safer and written to be tighter and less vulnerable then it's much better to stick with Linux stuff, especially in a Linux OS lol. Presumably you already know about this
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus
http://librenix.com/?inode=21
which i guess is why you chose linux in the first place?

You can widen your "Sources.list" to include other repositories but the standard ones are the main official ones that are carefully updated and it's ensured that software contain is of a very high and stable standard, definitely free of any malware.

Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)
