I've changed users permissions with Bastille and now cdrom doesn't mount automatically

Asked by Nabor Oliveira

I used Bastille to fine tune the security settings of my computer. One the things that I choose was to restrict users that have special permissions, like mounting cdrom drives (just root and my username). Since that, when I insert a cdrom I get the message:

It was not possible to mount the volume "VOLUME_NAME".
mount: it is necessary to be superuser to mount

I tried to use Bastille again to restore the default configuration but the problem persists.

How can I fix that? Is there any username related to a group or application that should have permission to mount cdrom?

Hello,

Navigate to System->Administration->Users and Groups
choose your user and click on properties.
Go to "User Privileges" tab

You should have the "Access external storage devices automatically" option checked.

Hi Hanusz,

my user account had already have this option checked. It seems that Bastille had removed the suid flag from "mount" and "umount". I fixed that using "chmod u+s" on them an now the cdrom mounts automatically.

The problem now is that the eject button doesn't cause the drive to open, unless I unmount the cdrom before. That is pretty annoying. My laptop is a HP Pavilion zt3280 with a NEC dvr+-rw drive (model DVD__RW_ND_6450A).
I tried the solution from this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=115499&highlight=CDROM+eject+button , but it has an undesirable effect. The system understands that the volume is still mounted. So, when I insert another disc, the system shows the previous label and doesn't start the autoplay action for the content on the disc.

I've posted another question with that new problem here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/8322

Thanks anyway,
Nabor
