OK this may be really dumb, but is there a way of developing for iPhone using Apple's tools runover Ubuntu, say via VMWare/VBox? Has anyone tried.?

Short answer is no but you can still write the software on ubuntu and then compile it or whatever on something else. I think the iphone is written in objective c and there is a complier for that in gcc but I dont know if the code will work if its compiled using a non apple compiler.
