Brightness of screen does not change.

I am using ubuntu 8.10 on my sony vaio laptop( model no. VGNCS12GH),
having video card of 'Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD' of Intel company.
The problem is that the brightness of screen does not change, so please tell me how to change brightnes. I have tried a lot but still unable to decrease the brightness. I am new user to Linux.

Hmm. This should "just work". Most laptops have a Fn+<Key> combination to de-/in- crease the screen brightness. Do you not have a some blue letting on your keyboard that would indicated brightness up and down?

Failing that, you could try the brightness app, which should be like a white "sun" in your top. Just click on it and change the slider position. It looks like the icon above the closing quotes, and to the right of the speaker:
