WIFI - how to connect XP to Linux filesystems
XP Pro SP3 -- Belkin Wireless G Desktop
Ubuntu 9.04 (2.6.28-15-generic) -- DELL BROADCOM BCM4306 802.11b/g MiniPCI
(or Generic RT73 Wireless B/G USB on either)
GOAL: To fileshare/backup between systems using ad-hoc wifi INTRAnet [both reach Internet via same router without problem; I am not allowed to make router changes]. Have tried the following:
XP AS WIFI HOST:
- enable Client for Microsoft Network, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- enable Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and Microsoft TCP/IP version 6
- add SSID "FOOBAR" with net auth Open and encryption Disabled
- enable Computer-
- disable 'connect if network is not broadcasting' and 'connect when network is in range'
* locate/connect on-demand from XP side -- seen on LINUX side, but won't connect
* delete config
LINUX AS WIFI HOST:
- confirmed Folder Sharing Service (samba) is set, and Multicast DNS Service Discovery is set
- add SSID "FOOBAR", set mode Ad-Hoc and disable Connect Automatically
- set wireless security to None
- set IPv4 settings to method Auto DHCP (and Available To All Users)
* locate/connect Hidden Network from LINUX side -- not seen on XP side
* change method to Local-Link -- seems to connect to its self with zero bar signal
* change method to Share With Local Computers -- same self connect with zero signal
* delete config
