New to LINUX..Root password got changed

Asked by Sushant

I was looking for some help on net regarding to my ubuntu problem.I came across launchpad and hope that it could get me way out. I am also one of the person who have understood that BIGGEST virus is windows. So, eventually i took decision to devote my entire disk to ubuntu 9.04.Later i installed virtual box and i use windows for some unavoidable things like VB n all.I am quite new to ubuntu,i made a mistake. While creating users i changed the root password and denied administer rights to myself (!! impression of bulshit window style !!!) so I think I am in some big trouble. So i will be really grateful if anyone could give me some direction.
..

Hi :)

Is the problem with a Windows password or an Ubuntu one?

For changing a Windows password you might like to use a specialist distro as a LiveCd
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=trinity
although it's entirely command-line based their user forums seem quite friendly and there is plenty of documentation from what i can see.

To run a LiveCd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

If the problem is an Ubuntu password then perhaps one of these 2 guides might hep
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

You dont need a root password, in fact enabling it reduces security as the account is common t al *nix systems. The account you made at install time is a member of the admin group so can use sudo to launch CLI comands with elevated (root-like) priveledges, and use gksudo for graphical apps the same.

root is disabled for great many many reasons, most being security. I recommend you re-disable the account and use an account in the admin group.

If you have forgotten your root pass, you can boot to recovery root console (perss esc when grub loads, select recovery mode then select root). You can then run:

passwd <your user name>

and set the password. Then run:

shutdown -r now

You can now logon ok.
