Asus Eee PC 1005H - both wireless and wired Internet connection not working - LAN interface Atheros AR8132 (vendor id 0x1969, device id 0x1062) (Attansic Technology Corp. Device [1969:1062] (rev c0)) not working out-of-the-box in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by snowdecay

Hey guys, wondering if I could get some help here. I am a freshmen Software Engineering and a brand new Linux user (2 days). Well I bought a Eee PC 1005H netbook about a month ago and every since my classes started my TA's and such have been telling me how great Linux is for software dev. Already owning a much better computer I decided why not give linux a try on this netbook. After some advise and google searchs I gave eeebuntu a try. After getting the os completely installed and setup I soon discovered that I wasn't able to connect to the internet (or even see the network connections). Having used the same build in wireless adapter for its prev os (win xp) I knew that it wasnt a hardware issue. So I took my netbook into the IT support building on campus. There I was told that the os wasn't able to find the wireless device.

When I got back home I did some research for a netbook-style linux os. After looking down the model support page for Ubuntu I notice that my model of netbook was listed as a supported platform. Downloaded the os and did a complete clean install over the prev one. After booting up I relised that I was now getting the same exact problem as before (not detecting the wireless device).

Does anyone have any idea what I can do here? My best guess is that its a driver issue of such (although the model support page of Ubuntu said that my netbook was fully supported...). Any advise or solution would be great! I would hate to have to go back to xp because I couldn't get the wireless to work. Thanks for your time!

If you run:

sudo lshw -C network

You should see the wireless chip your system has, you can then use this in websearches for guides

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Here are the results to that command. I am not able to connect to the internet through ethernet or through the wireless adapter.

Please any advise on how to fix this specific problem would be great!

[output]
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

You are running an Athero AR9285 chip

If you are running Jaunty (You can check with: lsb_release -a) then if you run:

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty

then reboot it will work.

lsb_release -a returns:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Codename: jaunty

but when I try the command sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty the following happens:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state intormation... Done
E: Couldn't find package linux-backports-modules-jaunty

I dont know if this would be a cause to this problem or now but I am using the Ubuntu netbook remix OS.

This packages are in the net repository so you must connect your pc using the ethernet cable then you can install them by open a terminal Applications→Accessories→Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty

Note: give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Well is there anyway I can download the required files on my computer (with windows vista) and transfer them to my netbook? Because not even the ethernet cable is responding to the network.

Please tell, which is the result of this terminal command

uname -a

Thank you

You need to download additive package depending from result of "uname -a" result...

For my ( uname -a: Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-15-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 9 10:49:34 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux )
the additional module are:

linux-backports-modules-jaunty linux-backports-modules-2.6.28-15-generic linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic

So you must download yours from http://packages.ubuntu.com/ then install them by typing into a terminal window:

sudo dpkg -i linux-backports-modules-jaunty linux-backports-modules-2.6.28-15-generic linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic

Note: give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

To enable the wired connection, please try frankyp's instructions at the following location:

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=69647

If that procedure does not solve the issue with the wireD internet connection, try using the newest alpha version of Ubuntu 9.10, which should hopefully support your wireLESS card out-of-the-box.

The wireD internet connection issue is linked to this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/363691

When I try and install the package posted above I get a error (Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: linux-backports-modules-2.6.28-15-generic).

Is this an easy fix or should I just look for Ubuntu 9.10 alpha? Would this be a bit more stable or reliable?

Please read what Mark Rijckenberg answer you, is much better to have a working network connection instead of try to download packages (and sometimes a lot of dependency packages)

Then the packages you need i think are:

linux-backports-modules-jaunty
linux-backports-modules-2.6.28-11-generic
linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic

Hope this helps

Unfortinally it doesnt a lot...

I have never complied a driver or anything of the such before. I went to that page but things were way to unspecific for me to figure out on my own.

cd ~; mkdir stuff99; cd stuff99; wget http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-meta/linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic_2.6.28.15.20_i386.deb; wget http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-meta/linux-backports-modules-jaunty_2.6.28.15.20_i386.deb; wget http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-meta/linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic_2.6.28.15.20_i386.deb; sudo dpkg -i *.deb; sudo apt-get -f install

You can also run:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and add this line:

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jaunty-security main restricted universe multiverse

Save the new file, close gedit, then run:

sudo apt-get update

If you give the output I can help you import the GPG key if you get any errors etc.

You should now be able to use apt-get to install the backport modules etc.
