Did you MD5 check the ISO you used? Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

Hi :)

Please try running a LiveCd session from your Ubuntu Cd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

If the LiveCd or the md5sum check don't work then get a new Ubuntu Cd
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

Please let us know how the md5sum check is going. If you are stuck trying to do it then please tell us so that we can try to help with that.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi again :)

If you only have 12Gb free then it's better to have as few partitions as possible. Too many partitions just causes problems. You really just need 3 partitions; 1 for swap, 1 for / [root], and one for home. The swap needs to be just slightly more than your ram size and the / one needs to be about 4Gb at most really but less might be possible.

We can help you reorganise your partitions neatly if you get a LiveCd session working and get to the command-line
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal
then type in

free -m

sudo fdisk -l

and use firefox from the top taskbar to paste the results into here. Note that " -l" is a lower-case " -L".
Thanks, good luck and regards from
Tom :)
