How do i install Ubuntu 7.04 from 6.10 & get newer version of Gnome-Power-Manager?
There was a bug in GPM ver 2.14.x and i was told i needed to upgrade to GPM ver 2.18.x.
How do i do this in Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake i386? I need every single step by step process to follow to accomplish this. Thanks.

Hello,
You need to upgrade to Feisty 7.04 to get the 2.18.x version.

I tried to upgrade to 6.10 and then to Feisty 7.04
I typed the following in Term. sudo update-manager -c
so i started to upgrade to Ubuntu 6.10 and then use the command again to upgrade to 7.04. I waited for about an hour while upgrading to 6.10. I thought i was through upgrading to 6.10 because i was asked to reboot.
When i started to upgrade to 7.04 i kept getting error message that said i had run out of disk space in " /boot " as it said i needed 4653K of space there and the upgrade was aborted until i got more space. I emptied the trash and ran " sudo apt-get clean " to make more space and my HD had over 16GB but the error came up again. I tried asking a question in Launchpad about what " /boot " was or how to empty space in it but my question failed to get posted.
Then i don't know what happened exactly but a dialog box came up and asked me if i wanted to upgrade. I said, Yes. and then it started to upgrade to ver 6.10 again! that was supposed to take 27 min.

/boot is a (usually small) area on your drive where the kernels are stored. If it's filling up, you probably have a number of old ones there that you don't need. Run "df /boot" to see how much space is available. Through synaptic (if possible), try to remove the oldest kernel you have installed. Don't remove the one you're running now - type "uname -r" to see what you're running now.
Did the upgrade fail to complete? If so, there may be plenty of packages that are not fully installed. "sudo aptitude -f install" should offer to try to fix it all up for you, but read through its suggestion very carefully to be sure it sounds reasonable (although I know myself it can be hard to tell if you're not very familiar with it).
To be honest, your best option might be to back up all your personal data and reinstall from a 7.04 CD. Maybe not what you might prefer to do, but sometimes it really is the fastest and cleanest solution.

The aptitude solution looks safe enough - it is only proposing to remove two fairly unimportant packages that you should be able to install again later.
"dpkg -l | grep linux-image" will show the kernels installed, for example in my case it only lists "linux-

Reading the "aptitude -f install" output, my concern is the suggested removal of other packages which I hadn't realised before, such as network-manager. Do you have a spare PC you could use if this machine loses its internet connection? If so, I think you really just need to say "yes" -- your package list is very, very, very confused and needs cleaning up. After "aptitude -f install" finishes up, run it again to be sure it's happy. If there's lots of things still missing, you can run "aptitute install ubuntu-desktop" to make sure that's installed.
Do you have a backup of your personal data? If not, make one now! :)
I still think a clean install is your safest option, but we can try to rescue it this way first, anyway.

I think also that a clean install is your best bet.
Make a backup of your home directory. Especially the hidden directories.

To answer several questions together:
The second run of "aptitude -f install" said "No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed", so this suggests that the package list is consistent. Things may be missing, but any conflicts are gone.
Removing the kernel has to be done as root, so you need to use sudo: "sudo aptitude remove linux-image-
/home/<
I'm afraid I don't know what the problem is with writing the DVD. What program are you using, and how are you using it?
If your PC is back online, did you try "sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop"?

It sounds like you've nicely cleared out the old kernels - running "df /boot" now should show you've much more space free there, anyway.
The last message about the symbolic links is okay. You're not using lilo (lilo, the "LInux LOader", did the same job as grub but grub is better).
Have you run "sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop" to make sure it's installed?
If that's done, is everything working okay?

Regarding your question about the kernels marked "rc", this means they've been removed, but their configuration files might still be around. "aptitude purge" instead of "aptitude remove" removes configuration files completely. This is fairly safe kernel packages.

Hmm. I'm guessing (and this is a big guess) that if you say "yes", it will more-or-less bring you back to a normal edgy setup.
Assuming you have a backup of your personal files, say yes. When it's finished, say "sudo aptitude -f install" again, just to be sure everything is nicely cleaned up again.
You should, I hope, then be able to restart the upgrade from edgy to feisty all over again using update-manager.

ok, about the clean install upgrade but i dont have a disk. how to do it?
I have 2 HDs. 1 is where operating system is. The other i installed later. I have copied everything i want to save from oem over to 2nd HD. Will the clean install of Feisty bother this other HD or should i try to copy everything off of it too? or shud i just unplug it from inside?
But i don't know how to remount it back.

Ah. To do a clean install you'd have to download the disk image from releases.ubuntu.com (or your national mirror of the same), write it to a CD, and run the install from there.
When doing a clean install it should ask you on which drive you wish to install. So long as you select the correct one, the other should be left alone.
Evolution might be broken on your PC at the moment, but it's still available in feisty. If you run "du $HOME/.evolution" it should still show your personal data taking up space (which is good!).

Ok, went to web sit and i can choose between Desktop CD or Alternate Install CD
[or server cd], do i do desktop cd
The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 256MB of RAM to install from this CD.
There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:
PC (Intel x86) desktop CD
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD
Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.
the Alternate CD;:Alternate install CD
The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:
* creating pre-configured OEM systems;
* setting up automated deployments;
* upgrading from older installations without network access;
* LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
* installs on systems with less than about 256MB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).
In the event that you encounter a bug using the alternate installer, please file a bug on the debian-installer package.

Yes, let it downgrade. This should bring you back to Edgy.
Regarding the CD, the "Desktop" CD is the live CD that you can use to try Ubuntu and then do an install. The Alternate CD is not a live CD, but just the installed with the packages. You can use either to install from scratch, but I think only the alternate CD can be used to upgrade as well.

If these messages were from yesterday, are there still the same messages when you try update-manager now?
A reboot shouldn't be necessary (that's only if you change the kernel), but it should be okay.

There are 2 versions of update manager the installed ver is 0.45.2 which
it says is the lastest ver; the other version available is .45 .

The two versions are correct, I think - 0.45 is the original edgy one, and 0.45.2 is the slightly updated version.
To be honest, I don't know what the problem is with either the gnome-app-install or the update-manager. :(
If it's the alternate CD that you made earlier, you can try to use that to do the upgrade. It's described at the end of this page: http://

I'm sorry to bother you on this one but i get confused about making
commands in Term.
This is what i got from the website you directed me to:
gksu "sh /cdrom/
What's with the " ? am i supposed to type gksu by itself? and then type
in the other info without the " " signs? I really must get clear on
this, ok? thanks

Can you help me understand these instructions?
3.) Edit your /etc/apt/
edgy to feisty. It is also recommended that you remove or disable any
extra repository that may have been added besides the Ubuntu repositories.
*
Long route: Use your preferred editor. If you have a CD-ROM line
in your file, then remove it.
For Ubuntu.
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/

Eeek! The manual upgrade process is really quite unpleasant, and unless there's something amazing in the setup of your computer that you can't do again, I strongly advise not to try it.
Given the basic problems that exist with even the ubuntu-desktop package on your PC, an upgrade is still likely to give you headaches.
At this stage, I can only recommend a new install, and you can be certain that your PC will be in perfect shape. It will also take you a lot less time.
I'm going to bed now - it's late here! Good luck! :)
