Ubuntu Install On Blank Hard drive.

Asked by SteveSteve

I'm a long-time Windows user/hater, and I'd like to install Ubuntu on my old computer (AMD Athlon 64 2.2Ghtz). I completely wiped the old hard drive, reformatted it, and set the BIOS to look for CD-rom to boot up. I downloaded the Ubuntu 9.04 and burned it to disk. When I try to fire up the old computer, it says that it's not a compatible boot disk....... Anyone else have this problem? Any help/suggestions would be welcome!

By the way, if you haven't tried the new AMD Phenom II Black Edition processors, DO IT! I bought the 550 dual core, upgraded the BIOS on my Gigabyte motherboard, and it unlocked the other two hidden cores. Nothing like paying 100 bucks for a 3.1Ghtz quad core!

Looks like you made a mistake with the ISO file. You should use ISO file
burning. So, don´t make a data CD. Then it won´t work.

What Windows program are you using to burn the ISO?

Your right, I did burn it as a data file. I'm using Nero 8 to burn it to CD. I'm not sure that Nero has the ISO option. Any suggestions?

Nero has no problems with it. The best way to burn it is double click
the ISO file. If everything is installed right, NERO is starting the
right program.

Give it a try.

No, I have to re-burn the CD as an ISO, instead of a DATA file. Thanks for the help!

You must check the iso, if it is corrupted it will not work

here are the hashes:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

here is the method:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

if you are using windows you can right click the iso, select open with, then point to your burning software

you do NOT create a data cd and have the iso file on the cd. this wont work.

Yes, some other guides to help

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

And two movies/screencasts
http://static.screencasts.ubuntu.com/2009/09/02/Ubuntu_Dual_Boot_Install.ogv

http://static.screencasts.ubuntu.com/2009/09/03/Ubuntu_Partitioning.ogv

I would recommend a dual-boot especially at first. Even if you never use Windows again at least it's there if you haven't yet found out how to do a certain thing in linux .

Good luck and regards from
