Network Manager missing

Asked by LEGOManiac

Someone left me a message today pointing me to Network Manager (nm-applet). I knew I had seen these menus before but hadn't been able to find them. Now I realize it's missing. It used to be in my upper panel next to the date and time but it's gone now. I don't recall removing it, and running "nm-applet" produces an error message that states that one of the needed resources is already taken which I presume means that Network Manager is already running.

Also, the person who replied to me said I should be able to find it in System->Preferences->Network. I don't have that. I have Network Connections and Network Proxy, neither of which is what I"m looking for.

On the top panel I have the Network Monitor applet installed - but again, it's not the same thing.

How do I get Network Manager back?

Download " network-manager.deb " and " network-manager-gnome.deb " files from http://packages.ubuntu.com/

install these files using this command.
sudo dpkg -i network-manager.deb network-manager-gnome.deb

I tried:

sudo apt-get install network-manager

which says the latest version is already installed.

As I indicated above, I had it before but it's missing from my upper panel and I don't know how to get it back.

For what it's worth, I had a problem for a long time with my display size changing which caused the icons along the top panel to become mis-aligned frequently. This is a known issue which I had thought had been fixed recently, although I wouldn't know for sure as I found another way to circumvent the problem.

At any rate, I suspect the icon is still on the top bar but is, perhaps, off-screen (?). I've tried moving everything left to see if it shows up again, but it didn't.

It seems your network works properly.
then try this.

right click in the GNOME panel and select "Add to panel" and select Notification Area. The icon should now appear...
