Community Documentation timed-out

Asked by Tom

Hi :)

I have been editing some Community Documentation pages to try to update and/or link them together a bit better to make better use of each other and to make them more useful to us here in the Answers Section.

Yesterday i did a major revision of this page using a Wikipedia page as a main source
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Linuxvirus
Unfortunately i over-ran the time limit for the page and there were a number of things left to quickly tidy up. I now can't login to edit that page although i can edit other pages without any problem.

The largest part is the External References link at the bottom of the page which needs to be edited to make into a neat list but these "moinmoin errors" cropped up because i had just thrown the section together without making it pretty. But also liitle things like in the "Bad Bunny" description ""BadBunny.pl"" needs to be changed to ""!BadBunny.pl"" so that it doesn't try to act like a link (to a dead-end). Also in the "Nuxbee" & "Rike" the last word "VirusList" needs to be made "!VirusList", again for the same reason. The rest of the links all work and seem useful but those 3 are auto-generated and just go to dead-ends.

Can anyone help me by just editing some of those things for me or else let me know how to log back in to edit them myself?

Thanks & regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

It's amazingly easy. Just get to the community documentation page you want to edit, in this case
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Linuxvirus
then look up at the top right-hand corner, just below the search tool it says "Login / Register". Click on that login link. Resist the urge to click on "No i am someone else", this is the tough bit ;) Then look down at the bottom right-hand corner and click on "Show Editing Options" - Then the bottom left-hand corner has "Edit". I found it a bit of a struggle arranging my screen to show the biggest area of what i wanted to see. That's about it really.

If you look just under the edit area there's a place to write a brief comment on exactly what change you made although it's pretty easy for people to compare in the history of the page. I am not sure what difference ticking the "Trivial Change" box makes, it doesn't seem to do anything.

It seems to be a good idea to stick within the time limit so having a plan and following the plan seems a good idea. Multiple edits are ok (ish) tho although some pages (not this one) have a list of people that get emailed each time you click on the save chagnes at the top of the edit area. :)

Blimey, that makes it all sound very complicated but really it's very easy. You will see what i mean when you start trying :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Well, the problems begin just after I escape the temptation to click on the "No, I am someone else" thingy-- I think he doesn't like that. xD

In fact, we have the exact same problem, I can't edit that specific documentation, the editing options seem to be lacking only there, whilst other documentations can be edited easily.

Here are two screenshots to prove that: http://i32.tinypic.com/szd6ir.png and http://i29.tinypic.com/2s7c1hw.png

Hopefully we'll be able to work this out soon ;)

Oh dear. Maybe i really broke something on that page. That last section looks even worse in decent resolution than it looks on my machine! I guess i will have to post a bug-report and fess-up to it :(

Thanks for trying :)

I don't think it's broke :P

Are you sure everything's fine with your internet connection? Have you tried to clean the browser's cache and cookies and restart it? Might help so you don't fuss anything else ;)

But do a bug report, I don't think we can do much else here, at least in terms of that poor documentation.

No problem, I like helping, or else I wouldn't be here, right? ;P

Thanks Marcobra too :)

I accidentally clicked on "This Solves my Problem" and then found there was no buttons to click on any of the previous answers. They were still missing just then but at least i could click on the right person even tho i couldn't click on the answer that had really helped me. I think it's one of those great launchpad upgrades because i'm sure it used to be possible. Perhaps it's just me being clumsy - it quite probably is just me.

Anyway thanks both of you :)
