Very simple. Right-click on an empthy space of your Desktop - Change Wallpaper - Add (on the Wallpaper tab)...
Search your photo and add it. Done

If you prefer you can install "nautilus-wallpaper" (you can do it with the Synaptic package manager or...
Open a Terminal (Applications - Accesories - Terminal) and copy&paste next line:

sudo aptitude install nautilus-wallpaper

Then "Enter" and type your admin-password.

Once installed you will find the option "Set as Wallpaper..." when you right-click on an image file

Yes but be careful about using Root or Sudo unnecesarily, it can play havoc with permissions for things and leave your system much more vulnerable to security threats
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Windows runs as Root a lot of the time and just look at how much hassle they have with security ;) Apart from those couple of things i really enjoyed those links, nicely found and thanks for those :))
