Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. Hi :)

Do you still have an Ubuntu Cd and can you boot up from it into a LiveCd session?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

The ram is quite a long way below minimum specifications for Ubuntu. really a machine needs to have over 512Mb ram, over 800MHz cpu and about 15Gb of hard-drive space to be installed on to.

However, i have just been trying out Xubuntu 9.04 today for the first time and was hugely impressed. It looks a lot nicer than 8.10 and i thought that looked quite nice. Crucially tho, it is very much faster than Ubuntu main. I would definitely recommend it to anyone now

As always linux distros it is a good idea to try it as a LiveCd first if that's easy enough.

Please let us know how the LiveCd session goes.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
