I accidently pressed yes while a question was asked confirming whether I want to delete permenently some data which cannot be immediately moved to trash. I pressed yes and lost data. How can I recover the same? I use 9.04 on a lenovo desktop.

First of all: don't do anything else on your machine if that data is so wanted to be retrieved.

The second: go on another computer and search in Launchpad, in Ubuntu forums with key-phrase "retrieve data" or "rescue data".

If you don't have success or don't understand what to do, thereafter ask please again here.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery

If you have an Ubuntu Cd then you can boot up from it to get to a LiveCd session
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
and that should help you at least be able to use the same machine without risking accidentally completely over-writing the lost data.

Note that any normal use of your machine may result in the data getting overwritten in a way that only data-recovery companies might be able to help with. In fact a local data-recovery company might be a good place to start from although they do often charge quite a lot so get a quote first, beforegiving them the drive, if you go that route.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

You should have a backup, no backup == data is disposable.

You can use foremost to try and read the disk surface to get files that have been deleted, you will need a destination partition that is equal or larger in size to output the rescued files to, file names will be lost and some files may only be partially recoverable so don't expect a miracle.

Hey, we are not really monsters? ;) Anyway there were 4 there. Marcobra and ActionParsnip tend to know far more about linux than most of us so perhaps only 2?

Anyway, hopefully one of us might have chosen a good route for you?
Good luck and regards from Tom :)

advocatepota,

me and the monsters, I think, are considering the problem of "loosing" data.
That's a big problem.
I suppose you can get back this data, but tell us how do you manage it, please.

I'm sure we want and can help you.

Forget those rrrr's or hshshssh's please - that's only a playing while waiting for your answer/question.

Did you lose your data?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask advocatepota for more information if necessary.
