connect to internet using a dialup modem

I'm a beginner in linux.
I installed Ubuntu 6 on my system. to play mpeg or mp3 files , the mplayer said I have to install the appropriate codec( I think from Ubuntu software channel. ).
I have a modem(PCI SoftV92Modem) , but i don't know how to configure it or Ubuntu doesn't auto detecting my modem. please give me the step by step instructions..
I only have a basic idea on linux.
Please help me.
