Canonical termination of critical updates for key Ubuntu components

Asked by Steven Sroka

When installing packages from the Repository, at the bottom of some package descriptions it says: "Canonical provides critical updates for XXX until XXX."

Will this mean that key components related to Ubuntu will be no longer available in the future. Who is supposed to provide the critical updates?

For Example: OpenOffice.org. Any ideas what this means?

The idea is that Canonical offers critical updates _for that version_ of the package for a period of time. After that, you just have to upgrade to a later version of Ubuntu, with a later version of that package.
