Jaunty won't boot up

Asked by Ken Johnson

Jaunty locked up on me two-three days ago. I used WUBI to do a re-install and the re-intall took care of my problems

Today, I shut the computer down in order do class work on XP --- V B2008 cant be installed on Jaunty.
Tonight, a serious attempt was made to log back on to linux side of my computer but - Alas! - I got nothing but grief. It would not boot up...

I got a kubuntu screen and then the computer went into a continuous loop with horizontal color bands going across the screen. Can anyone help me? I am a complete newcomer to linux and would appreciate a hand in this.

did you MD5 check the wubi installer? Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded (if you did download the ISO).

Did you try bootoptions:

Please also try a LiveCd session
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
as that usually gives you access to your hard-drive's data and also gives us the tools to try fixing some of these problems

Note that firefox should work fine fromt he LiveCd and help guide you into here. Please let us know

Good luck and regards from

I have a similar problem. Different setup but same result. I was upgrading from 8.xx to jaunty when after the upgrade it did a reboot and I noticed, for the first time, kvm module failed during the bootup. Then I see Ubuntu splash screen and then flashing back to shell then back to graphics of Ubuntu. Right at this moment the the graphics (monitor really) go wonky. It is like the monitor settings are not there and it is making it up. I see 4-5 images of the Ubuntu splash screen and it is taking up the top 10-20% of the screen. The rest is nothing. I have tried using sudo dpkg-reconfigure-phigh xserver-xorg and manually editing the xorg.conf file to no avail. And yes, I have tried the live-cd and the grub menu to do a repair.

Note that it was working in 8.xx with my Intel 945 graphics chipset. But I have read a lot able the issues of jaunty and the intel graphics problems. Any help without reinstalling and wiping out my drive would be appreciated.

Hi Johnathon :)

Please post a new question about that as it sounds like a slightly different issue. Also Launchpad can't really deal with 2 questions in the same thread
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

There is a neat trick about re-installing to the hard-drive but it seems i am the only one that knows how to do this so i am going to try to make a wiki-guide with screen-shots to help with this. Basically it involves re-installing from the LiveCd but choosing the "Manual Paritioning" route and crucially making sure that all partitions are UNticked in "Format?" column because reformatting wipes out all the data on the partition. It is best to backup all the data on the partition before attempting this as it does often go wrong if there's no backup. Also it helps if you can run this command on a command-line

sudo fdisk -l

and give the output into your thread so that we can give more relevant advice, specific to your machine. Here's a guide on how to get to the command-line
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal
and notice the " -l" tag was a lower-case " -L"

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Jaunty and WUBI were downloaded simultaneously in an XP environment. How do you do an MD5 in XP?

Re-installs of jaunty do not work because instead of horizontal band(S) of color, this time it is a wide vertical band.

Jaunty will load up ONCE when it is first loaded and installed, and it is a good load, but everytime thereafter it causes me trouble --- I do not get to the login site.

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks,

ken

Hi :)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM%20on%20Windows

If you are having troubles trying to boot into a LiveCd session then this page might help you to do that
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
Please take a note of which combination of Boot Options does get you to a LiveCd desktop. I would start by switching them all on and see if that works?

Good luck and regards from

Here are the hashes:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

Here is the method:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

You MUST check stuff BEFORE using it so you know for sure what you have downloaded is complete and correct. Blindly downloading something then using it without checking has no garuntee of succeeding as the data you have downloaded may have got garbaged in transit. This is very common for Windows users as they are often very ignorant of computers and the technologies they use.

Can you help with this problem?
