nautilus file view shows number of items not file sizes

In Nautilus list view I see a list of folders. Under the size column I see the number of items in the folder rather than the total size in bytes of the folder's contents. Is there a way to change this? Maybe add a display column for the number of items in a folder? I care more about the size of folders rather than the number of sub-folders and files contained within.

There is ongoing debate about how best to implement this feature: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/15582/ . There is no good way to do it right now, but you can still right click and select properties to get the folder size, though obviously that is not necessarily ideal.
