Live CD Karmic Alpha-5 does not work

Asked by Indian Art

I have dual booted my Acer 5920 Laptop & a Desktop with XP home & Ubuntu 9.04. I set the BIOS to boot from the CD Drive but Ubuntu Live CD Karmic Alpha-5 does not work after restarting the computer.

I get the screen where the language choice shows up. After I choose English (or let it select English after 30 seconds) it stops at the screen 'Try Ubuntu without making a change to the Computer'.

I have this problem with both my laptop & Desktop.
There is no further progress on my Desktop PC.

The previous version (Live CD Karmic Alpha-4) ISO worked very well on both the PC & Laptop.

On my Laptop it says CD I/O error.

I did the MD5 check on the ISO I downloaded with K3B before I burnt it on a CD.

The location I downloaded was http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-5/

I had unsuccessfully tried to download it from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.10/alpha-5/karmic-desktop-i386.iso however it got disconnected after most of the download was complete.

My ISP lays a limit of 8 GB upload/ download limit per month as per the broadband plan I have.

Therefore, I am hesitant to download it again unless I get a confirmation that there is no problem with the ISO file.

I am writing to report that this ISO image does not work on my systems as well ask the 2 questions below.

The question I want to ask is: Is this a local, isolated problem only I face or is this widespread. If so, will another ISO image which would work completely be put up on the website soon?

Hi, i just tried downloading it from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-5/
and also had problems with it cutting out at the last minute. Actually it seemed to disconnect my network connection for me. I am not a networking expert tho so it's possible that i havea quirky setup but this was on the wired broadband that is maintained by my my neighbour who is a bit of an expert at these things so i am really unsure. I am trying again tho.

Since the alpha 5 was only released yesterday (or something) i would leave it for a couple of days before trying again, given that your connection is not unlimited.

Perhaps you would like to post the bug-report about this? I'm not very good with following up on bug-reports.
Thanks for reporting it here :)))
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Exactly the same problem again. This doesn't appear to be just your system. Please give us a link to the bug-report you file about this or even just directly link it using the links at the top right-hand side of this thread in Launchpad.
Thanks again, good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi!
Just downloaded karmic-desktop-i386.iso from the link given by Indian Art with no any problems at a speed about 3Mb/s.

md5sum also is fine.

Hmmm, it seems to be working properly now. It did try to force disconnect me a couple of times during download but this time i had my connection set back to default to allow automation (re)connection and the firefox downloader was fine with the slight hiccups. I'm downloading Mint at the moment to test that i'm fully back to normal. The md5sums for alternate and normal desktop worked fine and i was able to LiveCd the 32bit desktop edition on a virtual machine. So it's all looking good now, mysteriously.

Hopefully it might work for Indian Art too?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,

I did finally get to download the ISO of Karmic Alpha-5 Live CD. Thanks. The problem I faced earlier with downloading may be because I was downloading this almost immediately after it was launched.

However, the problem I have still persists.

Although the previous version (Live CD Karmic Alpha-4) ISO worked very well on both the PC & Laptop, Karmic Alpha-5 Live CD does not go beyound the screen which says 'Try Ubuntu without making a change to the Computer'.

Would like to ask others if they too had such a problem?

Vihar, Tom are you running it as a Live CD or installing it? Does it work?

Thanks

I have been using the iso image as a virtual Cd for a virtual machine in VirtualBox and it works just fine as a LiveCd. I haven't yet tried making it onto a real Cd and booting my machine off that, perhaps later.

Have you been able to try out your previous alpha 4 Cd again as a LiveCd? Is that giving you trouble now too? I sometimes find this sort of thing happens and that popping the Cmos battery out to reset the bios back to factory defaults does the trick. Since i am quite heavily overclocking my machine (a 1.8GHz running at 2.5GHz at the moment but it was on 2.8) then i would have to write all my setting down on a piece of paper! yuk, or maybe onto my other machine in order to be able to get the setting right again. It would be odd if both the laptop and the main machine suffered the same thing at the same time tho. If it's still not working for you then i would leave it a week or so before downloading again?

If you could try the LiveCd sessions of a couple of other Cds that would be great. Perhaps try another distro sliTaz at 30Mb might be worth trying? (yes, that's 30 not 300!)

And I just tried the download of that .iso, Indian Art.

I am not using the new Karma for now but... may be will install it now to see, try and help eventually for bugs. Because I'm sure I will install it in April 2010.

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
