There are a few IM clients capable of running Yahoo messenger on Ubuntu. Either Empathy or Pidgin should be installed by default. Check under Applications > Internet and see if you can find either "Empathy IM Client" or "Pidgin Instant Messenger"

Once you open one of those Clients, a wizard should start to add accounts.

If a wizard doesn't start automatically, you can access the Accounts page with F4 in Empathy or Ctrl-A in Pidgin. In either case, there is an "Add" button. Once pressed, select "Yahoo!" from the dropdown menu.

Apparently the issue with Yahoo! messenger is two-fold.

This Yahoo answer appears to address both: http://tinyurl.com/mny4kk

What version of Pidgin do you have?
