Which package to report bug against: After clicking hyperlink in an application to load page in Firefox, keyboard input still captured by original application instead of the in-focus Firefox window

Asked by Furkan

Ever since upgrading from Ubuntu 23.04 to 23.10, and later to 24.04, I have experienced the following bug on two separate systems, which can be reproduced following the steps below. But I don't know which package to file this bug against:

1. Open an application such as Document Viewer (evince) or LibreOffice Writer.
2. Click on a hyperlink in the application (or in the case of LibreOffice Writer, type in your own URL like http://www.google.com, press space to make Writer turn it into a hyperlink, and then CTRL+click on the resulting hyperlink).
3. Once Firefox opens the page, attempt to type something.
4. Observe that even though the Firefox window is in focus, whatever you type will show up in the original application from which you clicked the hyperlink, instead of showing up in Firefox.
5. Also press CTRL+F and observe that the "find" toolbox or dialog shows up in the original application instead of in Firefox.
6. ALT+Tab back to the original application, and then ALT+Tab back to Firefox, and now the keyboard input will work as expected.

There is a slight change of behaviour after upgrading from Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04. In 23.10, if you have multiple windows open in Firefox, and you type the "%" key in the address bar to search for a tab that's open in another window, after switching to the other window the keyboard input still goes to the original Firefox window where you initiated the search. In Ubuntu 24.04 this problem is no longer present. But the problem described above with clicking a hyperlink from another application is present in both 23.10 and 24.04.

Given the difficulty of describing this problem with more concise wording, I've also tried unsuccessfully to search if anybody else has reported this bug already. So far I haven't come across another report.

Can anybody advise as to which package I should be filing this bug report against?

I'd say firefox. You can start the process with:

ubuntu-bug firefox

in a terminal :)
