driver for ubuntu 9.04 64bit ati radeon hd4200 onboard video chipset

Asked by larry stevens

just installed ubuntu 9.04 64bit on a new computer i built. the computer has an onboard vedo chipset ati radeon hd 4200. Tried downloading the ati device driver that came up on the screen, but it wouldn't download. Went to add/delete and typed in ATI driver, ATI binary x.org came up, so I downloaded it. The computer totally locked up when I tried to restart and I had to reinstall the whole OS. Am I to far ahead of schedule with an HD4200 on the 9.04 OS, or is there a driver available that will improve my graphics?

ATI provide a proprietary driver for his cards : http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.1&lang=English
You can install it on ubuntu 64bits.

want to stay with a 64bit system, and would like something simple to install and not the ati catalyst tm 9.8. maybe I should wait a while?
