file menu has a black background sometimes

When I open the computer or file menu the background is black so I can't read the file names. I may have to close and open the menu 3 times to get a white background. Sometimes the background is pink. I have dell ubuntu 8.04 on a mini 9 with no changes.

Are visual effects enabled ??
Try to disable them and look if the problem occurs again.

Thanks Your suggestion got me thinking and I changed the window theme and it
seems to have quit the black screen. I did not have a desktop effects
setting in my appearance menu so I couldn't disable it.
