how to set up a simple ftp server that can be accessed from another network

Asked by ginner159

my problem is that ive been trying to set up a ftp server so that my brother can access my server from home whilst im at uni using his xp desktop and so that i can store files on it from my vista laptop so that he can take them etc. Ive been searching around and following various guides but to no avail they all seem to get screwed up along the lines some where. im getting really annoyed!!!

i would say Ive began to get a very decent understanding of the Linux vocab but nowhere near an expert lol.

im using the latest version of ubuntu (jaunty), but would love someone to give me a hand in getting this sorted!

i really don't mind if i have to wipe and reinstall ubuntu or use a different i version, don't have anything on here to keep so that is not a problem

i am also using wireless and have an account with dnydns.

so please if any1 could give me a hand or help walk me through it so that i can have my own little home file server with ftp access that can be accessed over the net from anywhere in the world you will make me a very very happy lad!!!! :-D

cheers Matt

Did you check the Ubuntu Documentation?
https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/ubuntu/serverguide/C/ftp-server.html

It seems very straightfoward. If you're having some sort of problem connecting to the server might be related directly to your network, not necessarily to the server. Check if you have any type of firewall or router blocking the ftp ports.

Cheers
