update system freeze

My system freezes everytime I try to update or access the internet. I think it must be a NIC card problem. I am running Ubuntu on a Striker extreme with a 3ware 9650SE-LP4 Sata controller and a Nvidea 9600 video card.

I can ping fine from a terminal session but any GUI based internet operation will freeze the system completely. No mouse or keyboard reaction what so ever.

Same happens with driver and regular update. Please help.

Did not work. The systems still locks up when downloading anything within 2-3 seconds.
