Ubuntu freezing while copying files from an harddisk

Asked by Denis

Hi everyone, I'm experiencing an issue with my Ubuntu 24.04.

Whenever I try to copy data from an external hard drive, my system completely freezes after a while (screen, applications, mouse and keyboard are frozen).

I tried the various key combinations to unlock, restart or open the shell but nothing worked. Even the Caps Lock indicator (I have an LED that shows when it's active) stops functioning. The only way to recover is to forcefully power off the PC.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this issue?

Yes i tried all the USB ports.

On firmware updater I have only an update for the dbx from 220 to 371 but when I try to install it I get this error:
Failed to install firmware!

org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._g_2dio_2derror_2dquar k.Code13: failed to write data to efivarfs: Error writing to file descriptor: Invalid argument

I have similar issue. Thinkpad X250 and it hardcrashes on Ubuntu when copying really big files from external USB HDD to internal drive. I'm not sure, but I think complete system freeze occures when copying reaches cloned hdd files around +50gigs in size.

Only time I've ever encountered this kind of hardlocks is now after install Ubuntu 24.04.

I did read in Finnish Ubuntu forums that few users have encountered similar issues in 23.10 version too.

Can you help with this problem?
