libpam-cracklib for Ubuntu 24.04 does not appear to exist

Asked by Jon Yoon

I noticed that libpam-cracklib doesn't appear to be available for Ubuntu 24.04, but does appear for 22.04 and 20.04

Anyone have any ideas if it'll be added to Ubuntu 24.04 or has this package been retired and replaced with something else?

Debian did not package libpam-cracklib for Debian 12 Bookworm.
It does exist in Debian 11 Bullseye.
That would be why it exists in Ubuntu 20.04 & 22.04
Ubuntu copies there packages from Debian to avoid duplicate packaging.

Ah, thanks Bernard.

So am I correct in thinking this update here is steering me to use a different package?

https://github.com/linux-pam/linux-pam/blob/master/NEWS#L109

Release 1.5.0 of linux-pam says:

"Removed deprecated pam_cracklib module, use pam_passwdqc (from passwdqc project)
or pam_pwquality (from libpwquality project) instead."

And I am seeing a libpam-passwdqc and libpam-pwquality in Ubuntu 24.04

Confirmed that it's indeed deprecated (a little lower on that same NEWS page on that GitHub repo). Thanks.
