Total n00b question needing answered.

Asked by jophassa

So I have decided to make the switch from Windows to Ubuntu only to be faced with flaws in even this OS!

So I understand that when you want to manually install a program you must write some codes....but I have no idea what those are.

So I have a program named The Terminal which I have attempted to write codes in before but to no avail!

When I open The Terminal it has my loginname@computername followed by $ and maybe a wavy line in there somewhere too. What I do is write the code after these characters but it claims not to know what I want it to do.

Do I have to do anything else? If so, how? Where?

Thanks for any help on this issue!!!!

Hello,

Even if it is faster on the terminal, you don't really need it to install most of the sofware.

Also you would probably like to enable the restricted formats to use mp3, dvds and some videos.
more info about that here:

For installing software you can use synaptic or adept or any other packag manager that keeps hassles of installing the software from source or terminal. Before instllaing the software through source just check the dependencies or you might screw up the system with unwanted files.Read some of the material fromthe URLS posted by Hanusz.

Be Patient. When you're switching to the new OS you have to learn some in and out of the system.Linux is very user friendly if you kust flow with unlike with windows you can just be harsh as much as you cna but it limit to what you can do with it.But linux you are free.Just learn more about linux. Here is list of some links.

ah. thanks! i can't believe how much better the concept of help has been fulfilled than with MS Windows. Just one last thing, though: there is an option for me to play the DVD with subtitles but it doesn't allow me to select English etc.... any ideas? (I'm using Kaffiene still....)
