no version available for do-release-upgrade for 22.04 -> 24.04

Asked by Frau Tukka

The new Kubuntu release is out and I have updated all packages to the latest on my current Kubuntu 22.04. When I run the do-release-upgrade tool I get the following message:

$ pkexec do-release-upgrade -m desktop -f DistUpgradeViewKDE
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
There is no development version of an LTS available.
To upgrade to the latest non-LTS development release
set Prompt=normal in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.

The same with
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -m desktop
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
There is no development version of an LTS available.
To upgrade to the latest non-LTS development release
set Prompt=normal in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.

Any help for upgrading to the latest Kubuntu would be great. Thanks!

I found the answer here:
https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/currently-supported-releases/kubuntu-24-04-nitpick-noble-lts/pre-installation-ay/679339-looking-for-the-24-04-upgrade-path

Looks like for an officially supported upgrade path I will have to wait until August for the 24.04.1 patch.

I also found this unofficial path:
https://linuxiac.com/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-24-04-lts-from-ubuntu-22-04-lts/

See the release notes for Ubuntu 24.04
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-24-04-lts-noble-numbat-release-notes/39890#upgrades-4

Users of Ubuntu 23.10 will be offered an automatic upgrade to 24.04 soon after the release.
Users of 22.04 LTS however will be offered the automatic upgrade when 24.04.1 LTS is released, which is scheduled for the 15th of August.

I assume that this is fully valid also for Kubuntu.

If you, despite the recommendation to wait for the first point release, still want to upgrade now, you can add the "-d" option to the do-release-upgrade command.

The -d option does not seem to do anything:
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d -m desktop
[sudo] password for gschenk:

To upgrade to the latest non-LTS development release
set Prompt=normal in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.
