Open Office Installation Problem

Asked by Bob Runion

Question on Ubuntu 7.04 - I received an e-mail that a security update for Open Office was required. I downloaded the 'tar' package and put it into a folder on my home folder. I opened this package and it inserted '.rpm' files in the folder.

In following instructions I have in a 6.06 book, I was advised to get 'alien' to use to convert .rpm files to .deb files. My Ubuntu 6.06 PC apparently has the 'alien' software installed, so no problem; however, my Ubuntu 7.04 PC did not. So, at Terminal, I entered 'sudo apt-get install alien' since this package didn't appear in the 7.04 package. It appears that it installed.

I then 'cd' to the folder with the open office package and entered 'sudo alien -d openoffice*.rpm' and the .rpm files were converted to .deb files. I installed 'sudo dpkg -i openoffice*.deb'. Installation appears to have taken since I can see the updated 'openoffice*.9162' files in the Synaptic Package Manager along with what appears to be the former OpenOffice files also.

The problem I now have is that under 'Applications -->Office', this process completely removed all OpenOffice items.

So how do I now use OpenOffice if I can not access the items?

Also, should the 2.2.0-1Ubuntu3 files be 'completely removed' from the Synaptic Package Manager?

Or was the e-mail to update the security item a mistake on my part to even have paid attention to it and if so would removing the '.9162. files via the Synaptic Package Manager restore my PC to its former self?

Thanks for your question.

*All* security updates are handled fine through the ubuntu distribtion. There's no need to manually install updates, just use the update manager.

So the easiest way to solve your problem is to restore your PC to it's former self.

Hello,

You absolutely don't need to do this, openoffice will update automatically with the automatic updates.
You should go back to the openoffice provided by the Ubuntu repositories.

Installing software from sources (tar.gz, tar.bz2) or from rpm (the package format for the Redhat distribution) should only be done if there is no equivalent package in the ubuntu repositories (very rarely).

Can you help with this problem?
