solving video payer problem

Asked by Claude

Trying to play an MP4 video clip, I get error msg re: video/X-HX-AVC1 needed. Searching for it in Synaptic package manager, didn't highlight this codec or driver.

What to do? It's not rare to encounter a msg re: missing codec that is difficult to resolve.
Help appreciated

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Installs a whole host of codecs which are dead handy. You can aso install w32codecs or w64codecs depending on the architecture of the OS from the medibuntu repos

Working all through
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
should help fix almost all your multimedia problems and makes sure you don't miss anything. I would keep using non-free, proprietary components until asked to pay anything, if that ever happens. I guess i have been lucky so far but still hope to go completely OpenSource one day.

I think ActionParsnip has really solved the problem as stated. From his answer i suddenly realised it might be possible to do a bit more.

Good luck and regards from
