Can't install Sun Staroffice from CD

Asked by Peter

When trying to install Sun Staroffice 8 on Ubuntu 9.04 I get nothing but errors. When I attempt to search the packages on the CD using Synaptic Package Manager I receive the error "Unable to locate any package files, perhaps this is not a Debian disk". OK, it isn't a Debian disk, but a Sun Staroffice disk. I tell the package manager it is another type of disk, but this is the only error I receive.

Hi there,

this guide might help you with the installation:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/StarOffice

As far as I can see you will have to use the installation script, which is located on the CD.

Sorry, but the guide did not help me. I can get the Run command and writing the entry as described. Then I get a blank desktop and no terminal prompt. I tried to download gnome-terminal, alien and other files I found I didn't have to a DVD, but they would not download. I have the StarOffice 8 CDs, and managed to install the Windows version. The Linux version is #1992. I tried to get the downloads from Ubuntu on my Windows Vista desktop PC. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop, which is not connected to the Internet.

This link did not help at all, assuming I had an internet connection or Linux on my desktop. Neither applied at that time, but I have now set up an internet connection on my laptop. I do not bother with email on Linux, since I have that set up on my Windows desktop.

Why was I given an answer about anti-virus? The question has not changed since I started this conversation.

I think you will be better off starting with OpenOffice from the standard installation - this is essentially the same software just different edition. The StarOffice CD is not a standard debian/ubuntu software installation and cannot be installed easily (without some experience - not much but still). I doubt you will be missing any features - at least at the begining.
After gaining some experience you will be able to follow the instructions from the first post.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Peter for more information if necessary.
