Transfering files to Windows (Compatibility)

Asked by SamLago

Hi,

My sister has just bought a Dell with Windows VISTA (Intel, 512 mb, 120 Hard D). We've been thinking about installing Ubuntu (6.06) now, considering that it is the perfect momento (she's just got it, no need to transfer files and what not).

Please excuse the ignorance of the question, but I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer on here. If she were to save a "Ubuntu Presentation" file, or a "Word Processor" file on a pendrive, and then attempt to open the files on a Windows-based computer, I asume the files cannot open. How to get around this? Does she simply have to save the docs on her pendrive (Save as) as the typ of file compatible with windows (i.e.- Save the Presentation program as a ".ppt ")?

Thanks

Most likely, you would use the open office program for both presentations and documents. When saved in their native formats word and powerpoint won't open them. However, you could install open office for windows and solve the problem that way. You can also use open office to "save as" microsoft office formats. There is the potential for some formatting changes but unless your files are heavily formatted you probably won't have any real problems.

Hope that helps clear things up.

One more thing, any particular reason you are going with 6.06? It's a fine version but 7.04 is a lot nicer. If you are just looking for a desktop OS, I would suggest 7.04 (feisty). It is quite nice and lot has been added in the past year. It's funny, but dapper (6.06) looks old by comparison.

I agree to Jim, she has to choose SAVE AS and then make it as "proprietary" as possible... :)

It is not ignorant.. but there is a Website about this self-made-overall-Problem, Google for "GNU no-word-attachments"!
