Warning message, ".local domain"

Asked by s_raiguel

When I boot Ubuntu 9.04, I've recently begun getting a warning message, apparently from the Network Manager applet, saying "Network Service Discovery disabled. Your current network has a .local domain, which is not recommended and incompatible with the Avahi network service discovery. The service has been disabled." This computer sits on a home network with 192.168.x.x addresses, behind a router that handles external connections. What does this message entail, and is there something I should change or disable to avoid getting it?

These threads are a bit old, so I am not sure if they apply. See if the solution posted in them helps:

Problem solved, thanks to helpful comments posted here. Thanks, guys! I simply opened the Avahi config file and changed the parameter AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL to 0, as suggested in one of the threads. Presumably, I won't need avahi on this machine, anyway. Everything seems to work as usual after disabling the discovery service, but without the annoying popup.
