Unrecognized flash drive and REQUEST

Asked by Len B

My operating system is Ubuntu Studio using Ubuntu 23.10. The large USB flash drive I have recently purchased is not recognized by Ubuntu. Using the command line tools dmesg and smartctl I have found that the issue is that Ubuntu does not recognize the flash drive's bridge. Using the same hardware (ie dual-boot laptop), Windows easily recognized it. Partitioning, formatting and copying a file to the flash drive using Windows 10 did not make the flash drive recognizable to Ubuntu. Please add the USB bridge's chipset from the following vendor and product(s) to Ubuntu so these flash drives can be recogznized.

Vendor: Integrated Technology Express, Inc
Product: Chipsbank CBM2199 Flash Drive (aka UDisk)

Thanks!

The flash drive is most likely formatted as ntfs, which is windows file system.
Reformat the flash drive to fat32 or ext4. FAT32 is compatible with Linux and windows.

Hi, bernard010:
I have tried ext4 and exFAT in addition to ntfs. None of them work. The error points to the flash drive's bridge. The drive can be read and written in Windows and Android using exFAT. Just not in Ubuntu 23.10.

Try the FAT32 format for your flash drive.
Most manufactures use FAT32 when it is new.
Try using a different flash drive on your Ubuntu just to test the flash drive is good.

Boot with the device unplugged and run:

sudo lsusb

Plug the device in, wait a few seconds then run:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; dmesg | tail; lsusb; sudo parted -l

What is the full output please?

Below is the full output. I have enclosed the specific device in asterisks. Though I used parted to format the flash drive as FAT32, for some reason parted does not show the fs after unplugging and reinserting the flash drive.

Thanks!

The disk seems to have bad sectors and these will only get worse. You may be able to tell the system to ignore them but the drive will eventually fail.

Can you help with this problem?
