renaming external drives

Asked by nokangaroo

How can I rename external volumes? When I try it I get the "resource busy" error. I can see there have been bugs filed about this issue, but maybe there is a short answer. Should I waste more time on this or not?

The volume in question is hfs+. I can rename ext3 partitions with gparted, but that does not work for hfs+ because the "label" switch is greyed out and not clickable. I could always rename it under MacOS, but that would probably give trouble, like the "two folders, ubuntu and ubuntu_" nuisance I ran into.

May be you have to unmount them first in order to use labeling?

Can you help with this problem?
