External drive fails to mount

Asked by drifter

Suddenly and after using my OMEGA external drive for over a year my Ubuntu 8.04.1 is failing to mount it with the following error :-

'mount_ point cannot contain the following characters:newline,G_DIR_SEPARATOR(usually/)'

I may have installed updates prior to the failure and I did install wine hoping to access some old Windows apps on the external but took it off again because I could not mount my External Drive. Now I am panicking because I have loads of files on there including my wifes photographs! I must fix this before she gives me absolute s..t.

The external is a 120GB v(FAT32) Mount Point/media/OMEGA DRIVE. Help!!

I found this solved bug that is very similar to your problem :

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-mount/+bug/107668

You will have to change the name of the mount point as described on the bug page.

Thanks Antony, I have read everything there. I don't really understand any of it too much. I would like to try the suggestions but I just cannot afford to make a mistake. I cannot believe it has happened after a year usung the system. The strange thing is I can get access by using the live disc. It works perfectly. Is there anyway,do you know that I could try a repair using the original disc? If so I would need a very simple explanation because I am not tech minded! George.

Does this work for you:

?
Removing hidden directories from the Home is not destroying the program related to them but only removing LOCAL configurations. Once the program is ran again it creates new directory.

Vinhar. A million thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!! That worked and all without my wife complaining! I will write down this little `gem' in case it happens again. I will thank the guy who posted the original too. Once again, thank you very much and all the best. George.

Thank you too!

I just went to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ and tried search with the phrase "G_DIR_SEPARATOR(usually/)" to see if there are similar questions. Found one that I think could work and gave here the link.

Have a joy with Linux/Ubuntu!
