Don't make this mistake!

Asked by JBatch

I know this is a statement rather than a question, however everyone needs a laugh now and then. I'm new on Ubunbtu.(2 weeks) Wireless router worked before with no security. Put security on my wireless router. Tried to hook up my laptop. No connection. Restored wireless router to factory settings. Still no wireless connection but wired connection is working. Working on desktop and laptop. Spent 3-4 hrs searching for fixes in gnome and launchpad with both computers. I mean terminal command changes and looking through forum posts. The whole 9 yards. Guess what? My wireless button was not on! I turned it off a few days ago when working in the library with a wired connection because I didn't need it!

Include as much detail as possible: what you’re trying to achieve, what steps you take, what happens, and what you think should happen instead.

What I should have done is a decert (my head) and check the simple issues rather than diving in head (or shoulders first) into more complex assumptions.

Stop laughing so hard.

Ahhh a waggle-the-wires answer after in-depth highly technical desperate searches and possible hot/cold sweats with a feeling of panic and being crushed?

They do happen quite a lot, welcome to computer-land ;)

Err, don't think that knowing that will save you from it happening again, it happens a lot. I did have the t-shirt but i lost it somewhere and can't find it right now ;)

Tom!

Thanks for making me feel normal and a part of. I have this vision of massive numbers of highly intelligent geeks responsible for this and I have no business here.

Take care,

JBatch

Geek or hacker?

Errr, i hate to break it to you but you have just publicly outed a very hackerish trait. 2 in fact.

1. You use linux. Only geeks use linux. Err, there we go :)
3. http://catb.org/jargon/html/magic-story.html

http://catb.org/jargon/html/magic-story.html....Thats funny.

I'm so overwhelmed by all this stuff I figure I can call myself a Geek after 10 years of 10 hour days. The guy who turned me on to Ubuntu said it's much better and less problems than Micro...ripoff. I'm sure however if anybody wanted to hack my stuff they could. I'm just not that important. Hell I've been looking for my favorite t-shirt for 3 years. I think the dryer mistook it for a sock.

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
