Signal Strength Applet on taskbar

Asked by Tom

Hi :)

Is there a gnome applet for showing the signal strength of wireless connection? At the moment the only way i can find out is by trying to download emails and see how slow that goes. Also when i don' get 3G signal it switches to GPRS which is desperately slow and it'd be nice to know in advance of trying to open emailer whether i'm on GPRS or 3G. What do GPRS and 3G stand for in this context?

Still on boat, sorry i've been quite slack about chasing things up. Hopefully i will catch up at the weekend.

Good luck and regards to all.
Thank and regards from
Tom :)

Doesn't the nm-applet do that on the panel?
You can also get more info about your connection if you install the small package "wavemon".

Hi, thanks for the answer so far :)
The nm applet looks identical to the signal strength monitor on a mobile phone however it doesn't fill any of the bars - also it doesn't indicate whether it's a GPRS or a 3G signal!

A conky script might do the trick if anyone has a good section for that. I will try the wavemon idea - thanks for that :)

So i still need a panel icon for monitoring signal strength and type of signal.
Thanks so far
Good luck and regards from

I thought you where on a holiday.

In my case my Wifi shows 4 bars. Blue. If I move my laptop from my Router I only see 3 and more I see 2 and so on.

If you want to see more you should remove Network manager and install wicd. There you can see more.

See you back in the same time zone soon.

Hi

Not so much a holiday - more just trying to get this system working on a boat.

Aaargh, i've not tried WiCd at all! I was hoping for a simple little applet to add on or perhaps a chunk of conky-script to add in. It looks like i might have to leave this functionality :(

Tom ;)

I miss it too. That was a nice thing in Windows. To bad it´s not here
in Linux. Or we can´t find it... lol

I dunno, there must be a simple applet for the panel and conky is excellent - well worth installing and exploring if you have the time!
