lost sound after trying to updating drivers for alsa

Im new to this ubuntu thing and of course I managed to screw something up :-(

heres what i did:
due to the microphone not wanting to work, i tried to update to the latest alsa driver (1.0.14) via a root terminal instruction i found here (ooops). now i dont have any sound what-so-ever! so i tried to reverse the process by following the same instructions but changing the driver version to 1.0.13 but that failed also. does anyone know how i cant get the original alsa driver back short of a complete re-install of unbuntu 7.04?

i have an audigy LS sound card

Can you paste here the results of these commands (given from a terminal):

cat /proc/asound/version
grep VERSION_STR /usr/include/alsa/version.h
amixer -v

Also, can you remember why the installation of the new drivers failed?

thanks for the reply but since it was a new install and I had only set up a couple of things, i went ahead and wiped the drive and started over. all is working fine now! lessoned learned for me is that i must research a bit more before doing anything drastic in ubuntu like trying to update sound driver. i tried to also use ati's linux drivers for the 850 card i have and that went over like a lead balloon also go figure. all in all though i really like ubuntu and havent been in windows for a couple of days now. this is the first release of ubuntu thats ever worked on my system

PUT IN TERMINAL:
cat /proc/asound/version
grep VERSION_STR /usr/include/alsa/version.h
amixer -v
